The farm that is delivering our milk (in a refrigerated truck kept at 34 degrees) is Dungeness Valley Creamery. They are located on the Washington peninsula in Sequim. The cows are all registered Jerseys, turning out delicious, creamy milk. The farm is a grade A certified raw milk creamery in WA state. The cows are on organic pasture from mid-March-ish to mid-October-ish (depending on weather). They winter on Eastern WA alfalfa, grown without the use of pesticides and herbicides, though not organic.
During milking the cows have access to a small amount of grain. They use less grain than conventional dairies because too much grain changes the pH level in the rumen (the largest of the 4 stomachs) of the cows and can cause a ripple of illness. The grain is a 16% protein blend with no soy, corn, canola oil, cottonseed oil, and no synthetic hormones. It contains wheat, barely, oats, molasses, and minerals. They come from a local family farm, Elenbaas, in Sumas. The grains are not organic but are very high quality. The milk is taken from the holding container and placed into recyclable plastic jugs in quart, 1/2 gallon, and gallon sizes. Unfortunately, glass is not an option.
There is additional information about the creamery on the Real Milk site, Facebook, as well as on their new website.
