Legalities

Oregon law prohibits farms from selling their raw milk in a retail fashion. In Oregon, a farm may only sell raw milk direct from farm and may only have 3 or less milking cows and 9 or less milking goats. This makes it extremely difficult for normal people living in the city to access good milk. It does ensure that the consumer has seen the facility and enforces a self-regulating accountability.

Washington has chosen to do this differently by certifying farms to sell milk. The state inspects it, and customers are welcome to visit as well. Farms are welcome to sell their milk at drop points and grocery stores to expand business. There are no restrictions on the number of cows a farm can milk, which allows them to increase along with the demand.

Interstate commerce law prohibits a farm from taking raw milk across a state boarder. Fortunately for us, it does not prohibit a car-pool fashion of one person crossing the border to purchase milk for a group of friends. What we are doing as a community of health conscientious people is completely legal. No worries!
